Muddy Waters Kennel participates in the Orthopedic Foundation For Animals and posts all scores, regardless of ratings. We strongly support the Canine Health Information Center/CHIC for Irish Water Spaniels.
One of the facts about buying an Irish Water Spaniel is how significant each dog is to the breed. The health information you provide us will be used to help preserve this rare breed and guide it toward a sound future.
Buyers need to notify us of any medical problems that develop throughout the life of their dog. At two years of age several health checks need to be preformed: an OFA x-ray of the hips and elbows need to be taken and submitted to the Orthopedic Foundation For Animals. Blood needs to be drawn so the dogs thyroid can be tested and the results submitted to the OFA Thyroid Registry. The dog needs to have his eyes examined/CERF'd by an Ophthalmologist.
We recommend rechecking the thyroid every two to three years. The same should be done with the eyes.
Dogs used for breeding need to be CERF'd yearly and a cardiac OFA done.
